Poo-Chi (ISBN: 1590050347 / 1-59005-034-7) Quantity Available: 2
Book Description: Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.: Nazraeli Pr, 2002. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Offered here SIGNED by the Artist and in AS NEW condition is Mayumi Lake's "Poo-Chi," published in 2002 by Nazraeli Press as a LIMITED edition of 1,000. This is a hardcover book with a pictorial dust jacket covering gray silk boards, upon which is stamped a small red heart in the center. Features text by author and artist Joanna Frueh. It contains 32 pages with 16 four-color plates and measures 7.5 x 10 inches. Mayumi Lake's careful framing of adult bodies (armpits) with dainty clothing suggests, upon first viewing, the exposed genitalia of young girls. It is, indeed, disturbing. And that is part of Lake's intention. In the context of her own identity as a Japanese woman, who grew up with conflicting ideas about sexual behavior, she is trying to explore sexual triggers. She says, "I am interested in uncovering my own identity by aggressively evoking emotional reactions from my viewers." Her photographs explore forbidden sexuality and what she refers to as "the interaction between the real and imaginary." From the Publisher: "The images in this book are not what they at first appear to be. Look again, and closely. Mayumi Lake's series of color photographs focuses on the wakinoshita, presenting this often neglected part of the body in a discomforting new light. Know what the true subject is, and while some unease might remain, any revulsion turns to curiosity, admiration and perhaps even delight. The wakinoshita Lake portrays with such intimacy and originality are shown in a wide array of 'poses'; dressed with crochet, lace, embroidery, fake fur, these obviously adult bits of body take on a diverting, playful look. But underneath the soft and feminine drapes nestle the dark hairs and folds of flesh that give Lake's work a decidedly unsettling edge. As with all illusion, there is more here than meets the eye: the viewer is drawn time and again to take another, deeper look.". Signed by Author(s).
