From Booklist:
Reviewed with Susan H. Gray's The Nervous System.

Gr. 3-6. These two titles in the new basic biology series, the Human Body, provide an unusually sound overview of a topic represented in most upper-elementary science curricula. Each book opens with a child performing a familiar activity--running a race, playing a video game--that introduces the featured system in a concrete way. This tactic reflects Gray's consistently child-centered approach, which is reinforced by clear, vivid explanations: blood cells move through capillaries so tiny they travel "in single file," and the nervous system "shoots" out electrical signals that then "zoom" to their destinations. Features on intriguing topics, such as a spread about hemophilia ("the royal disease") and another about people with unusually abundant taste buds, enrich the core material. Subtract a few points for the haphazard glossaries, some unprofessional-looking diagrams, and curiously generous leading, but the high standard of the explication still carries the day. Further reading and other resources, including Internet links accessible on the publisher's Web site, are appended to each volume. Jennifer Mattson

From School Library Journal:
Gr 3-5-This revised edition of the 2003 series combines rewritten texts, bright new illustrations, and a freshened up, more visually inviting design. Nonetheless, for all these changes, more is still promised than delivered: in The Digestive System, excretion is not discussed or even mentioned, and a chapter on the senses in Nervous System names only five. The existence of the endocrine and reproductive systems are not acknowledged at all. Furthermore, though some of the illustrations are micrographs or labeled, comprehensible schematic images, most of the pictures are uninformative filler photos of happy children at play or rest. The systemic approach and slightly higher level of detail make these natural companions for the publisher's "Take a Closer Look" series (2013), but neither are dependable first choices for serious study or assignment work.α(c) Copyright 2014.
