Over the last twenty years, I have had a good deal of professional success. In different roles, I met or exceeded goals set forth both by investors and by myself. I founded and built companies, managed existing ones through the good times and the bad, and sold businesses at great profit to all the parties involved. The story recounted in this book, however, is not of one of these successes. The tale of Geotek Communications, and of my role as its founder and CEO, is ultimately one of failure. Geotek, after all, was a company forced to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection and sell itself in parts. I, as the man who ran it, was responsible for my part in allowing that to happen. The fact that I was also the one who created Geotek, and led it to its earlier successes, was of little comfort to the investors who lost their money, the employees who were let go, or the customers whose wireless phones suddenly became useless. As a member of all these groups, I did understand the bitter feelings instigated by Geotek’s downfall, although I certainly do not claim to be the victim in this story
