The story opens with a land rush, a rather ingenious method of getting all the relevant characters tossed together without having to divulge much, if any, muddlesome backstory. Half-a-million acres have been opened for settlement, and an anxious, teeming mob awaits the sun's rising, when they can hurtle across the plains and stake their claims. The land is in the Gallatin Basin, which is big enough for a lot of things but quickly proves not big enough for two rival ranching outfits, a venomous gunslinger, a family of bitter frontier trash, insufferably suspicious sodbusters, and exactly one pretty gal all at once. In this generously action-heavy tale, Holmes hardly lets more than a page or two flit past without letting fly either a fist or bullet, all the while tending a steady boil of tension as the community settles itself disjointedly from the free-for-all land scramble to the rough but welcome sketches of order.
