Anastasia agrees to go to Seattle to interview the mysterious CEO of Grey Enterprises Holdings, Inc. for the student newspaper in place of her ailing roommate, Kate Kavanagh. She arrives and is greeted by a young, blonde receptionist. She is directed to the twentieth floor. As she waits, she studies the questions Kate wants her to ask, wishing she knew more about the CEO., Mr. Christian Grey.
Anastasia falls walking into Mr. Grey's office and he helps her up. She is shocked by how young and attractive he is. She tells him Miss Kavanagh was unable to be there, so she came in her place. Ana awkwardly asks him the questions on Kate's list. In response, Christian tells her it is his ability to judge people and hard work that have led to his success. Ana is disturbed by his arrogance, but he seems amused by her.
As they wrap up the interview, Christian asks Ana about her plans for after graduation. He mentions the excellent internship program at Grey Enterprises Holdings, Inc. Ana tells him that she does not think she would fit in there. He walks her to the elevator and helps her put on her jacket. She gasps at his touch. He enjoys her reaction.
Chapter 2After the interview, Ana is overwhelmed by her unexpected response to Christian Grey. When she arrives home, Kate begs for details. Ana tells her that Christian Grey is very intense. Ana scolds Kate for not giving her more background information on Christian Grey for the interview, and Kate apologizes. Kate later tells Ana she did an excellent job with the interview and given her great stuff to use in the article. She only wishes she had a recent picture to go with it.
It is Friday night and Ana's friend, Jose, shows up at the door with a bottle of champagne. Jose is a photographer. A Portland art gallery is going to showcase his work. He wants to celebrate with his friends.
On Saturday, Ana is at the check-out counter at the hardware store where she works when she looks up and sees Christian Grey. He tells her he was in the area and needs to stock up. He asks for cable ties, and she shows him where they are. He explains that he is visiting the Washington State University (WSU) farming division because he is currently funding research there on crop rotation and soil science. They talk about the interview and Ana tells him about Kate's desire for a current photo of him...
