The Piao Tongshi, by an anonymous author, is the most intensive Chinese colloquial handbook for Korean travellers to China. The original text may go back to the 13th or 14th centuries. However, the edition available to us, the Piao Tongshi yanjie, is from 1677. The old Mandarin vernacular described in this book is, in fact, closely related to the language of the famous Yuan textbook known as the Lao Qida, of which a detailed study by Svetlana Rimsky-Korsakoff Dyer appeared in 1983. This work deals with some of the grammatical features, literary and cultural contents of the Piao Tongshi.
