About the Author:

The Marquis de Sade achieved infamy in eighteenth-century France, both for his personal sexual habits (which resulted in his imprisonment) and for his sexually uninhibited writings. De Sade was a prolific writer, and his prodigious output was, if anything, encouraged by his frequent spells in gaol and, ultimately, a mental asylum. His most famous works include Justine and The 120 Days of Sodom. Poet and novelist John Burnside is reader in creative writing at the University of St Andrews. His poetry collection, The Good Neighbour (2005), was shortlisted for the 2005 Forward Poetry Prize (Best Collection).
