At the time of Rodin's death in 1917, Apollinaire declared 'Medardo Rosso is now the greatest living sculptor'. Rosso's works have been much admired by artists from Degas and Boccioni to Tony Cragg, but his art is rarely seen widely outside Italy. Still, he is considered a pioneer of modern sculpture, and the aim of this exhibition publication is to show a broad cross-section of Rosso's work, while exploring his use of different media to approach the same subjects. His method of sculpting, modelling wax over plaster casts, was highly unusual, enabling him to create subtle effects of light and movement in his sculptures - an approach which linked him with the Impressionists, and looked forward to the work of the Futurists. This publication includes an essay by Luciano Caramel, an acknowledged authority on Rosso's work. In addition, there is an essay on Rosso's drawing by Vanessa Nicholson, and a technical analysis of Rosso's techniques by Derek Pullen. The sculptor Tony Cragg has contributed a personal appreciation. Book Condition : Good Plus: slight rubbing/shelfwear to covers but cover colours, whites and tones preserved; slight toning around margin areas of pages which have otherwise kept their whites, colours and tones, and are in very good shape; binding strong, secure and tight like new.
