Book Description: Exhibition Bordeaux March 25 - May 30, 1993. By Pippo Ciorra, Brigitte Fitoussi, Vanni Pasca. Zürich : Artemis, 1993. 163 S. Mit zahlr. auch farb. Abb. Originalbroschur. Einband leicht berieben. - Tex engl. und franz. - This monograph accompanies the "Antonio Citterio & Terry Dwan" exhibition held at the Bordeaux arc en rêve architecture center from 25 March to 31 May, 1993 - the first major show dedicated to this Milan-based studio whose work is remarkabl" for the close links it maintains between architecture and design, and the constant attention it pays to the complementary effectil this can achieve. Besides being a catalogue, the book presents their design projects, interior layouts and architecture, as well I as Citterio's work done before his association with Terry Dwan. Like many Italian architects, Citterio is atavistically drawn to the rich design tradition of his country, and like most of the great Italian designers, he is a qualified architect himself. Yet few of his peers have succeeded - as he has - in merging the twin fields of design and architecture in professional practice. From the outset he showed an innate aptitude for designing I furniture, along with a sense of detail and a taste for craftsmanlike assemblage. He was influenced as much by the Modern I Movement as by the work of Carlo Scarpa and Charles Eames, and no doubt inherited a family tradition of craftsmanship from his father, a cabinetmaker who made chairs. Careful attention to construction materials is also a vital part of his poetics. Citterio thus has a special gift for moving between design and architecture, merging an art of living and furnishing into the 1 same simplicity of line; with equal sensitivity, he reveals the nature of plain materials and understates formal or technological gesture to get at what is essential. He began designing as soon as he qualified as an architect in 1972, working in the field of industrial consultation and design. Though an associate of Paolo Nava, he remained his own man and produced furniture. ISBN 1874056269. Bookseller Inventory # 966797
