In 1966, photographer Milton Rogovin wrote to Neruda and asked wher he shoud go to capture the heart of Chile. Neruda suggested the island of Chiloe where, he said, "It is wonderfuly untouched, poor and full of human interest." Rogovin traveled there in 1967 and produced the photographs in the book, which are complemented by Neruda's poems.
