Grade 3-4-In this third book about Flick, the two-legged dog is on trial for biting the town bully. When his owner, Jack, runs into Bradley and Bradley's pit bull, a confrontation ensues and the bully is bitten. Enter Bradley's father, a lawyer who is just as mean as his son. Poor Flick ends up quarantined while his fate is decided in court. The courtroom drama falls flat. Faced with the possibility that his pet may be destroyed, Jack whines and pouts. Although he says he will work night and day to get Flick out of "doggy jail," it is Jack's father who solves the case without much help from his son. Jack is supposed to earn enough money from dog-sitting to buy a fishing pole. Instead, he receives it as a birthday gift and the dog-sitting subplot is dropped. The characters have little depth. The black-and-white drawings accurately depict the story, what little there is of it. Skip this one and buy additional copies of Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's "Shiloh Trilogy" (Atheneum, 1998) instead.
