Book Description: Portikus Frankfurt Am Main & Barbara Gladstone Gallery, Frankfurt am Main, GERMANY & New York, 1997. Pictorial Self-Wrappers. Book Condition: Very Good -. First Edition. Oblong 8vo. np, profusely illustrated in color. Text in English. Designed by Matthew Barney and Tony Morgan. This is the copiously illustrated catalogue documenting Matthew Barney's film cum opera "Cremaster 5"; the third of five installments in the Cremaster Cycle (named after the muscle that raises or lowers a man's testicles in response to temperature). This episode stars Ursula Andress as the "Queen of Chain", Barney himself as "her Diva, her Giant and her Magician", and a passel of Asiatic sprites all set against the lavish backdrop of nocturnal Budapest! A most presentable copy showing just a bit of overall light wear and handling along with a tiny chip to the publisher's translucent printed plastic cover overlay at the crown of the spine. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Book Description: Portikus and Barbara Gladstone Gallery, Frankfurt and New York, 1997. Soft cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Soft cover. Photographically illustrated stiff French-fold wrappers with additional printed translucent vinyl outer wrap; no dust jacket as issued. Film by Matthew Barney. Text by Thyrza Nichols Goodeve. Includes credits for the film. Designed by Matthew Barney and Tony Morgan. 108 pp., plus 8 two-page gatefolds, with four-color plates throughout. 9-3/8 x 11-1/2 inches. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at Portikus, Frankfurt, C3 Center for Culture and Communication, Budapest, Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York and Film Forum, New York. CONDITION: Near Fine (minor shelf wear and bumps to corners, else Fine). Named after the muscle that raises or lowers a man's testicles in response to temperature, the Cremaster series has featured Barney as a satyr, a magician, a ram, Harry Houdini, and even famous murderer Gary Gilmore, props made from tapioca, petroleum jelly, ice, and self-healing plastic, and settings as fantastic and desolate as the Isle of Man, an empty football stadium in Idaho, and a nearly empty opera house in Hungary. The films are slow-moving and weirdly hynotic, full of elaborate sexual and biological allusions, references to sports and fashion, and a bizarre mix of autobiography, history, and private symbolism that have earned him comparisons to Wagner. This book is one of the five companion volumes published to coincide with the release of each of the Cremaster films. Each was designed in an original manner by the artist and features photographs and stills from the film it accompanies. Bookseller Inventory # 106195
