The Gospel of Filth is the boldest, most comprehensive guide to the realms of darkness and devilry ever published. Taking in every significant milestone and major landmark, this lavishly illustrated volume is the definitive study of the dark side. No tombstone remains unturned in this wide-ranging and witty dissection of the uncanny and unholy, of the esoteric and erotic. Music forms The Gospel's entry point, but every medium, from movies and literature, to comics and computer games is considered, while the authorities consulted range from Oxford academics to metal musicians as well known for their criminal records as musical ones.

The principal consultant is Dani Filth, who rides shotgun with author Gavin Baddeley, providing insight and impish irreverence at every turn. Dani's band Cradle of Filth are one of England's most successful and controversial musical exports of the past decade, loved and loathed in equal measure, the singer bringing that same provocative edge to this, his first literary effort. Emerging from the violent cauldron of chaos that propelled the black metal scene to the forefront of the extreme music scene in the early-90s, Cradle of Filth have since transcended such subcultural boundaries, embracing the likes of Decadent art and Gothic literature to create an inimitable, sensuously sinister style all of their own.

Experts consulted range from ex-FBI Agent Robert Ressler (who first coined the term 'serial killer'), to world expert on psychoactive drugs Richard Rudgley, via Satanic High Priest Peter Gilmore. Legendary horror film director Dario Argento gives insight into his art, as do War of the Worlds composer Jeff Wayne, controversial art director Nigel Wingrove, Lovecraftian artist John Coulthart, and ghost photographer Simon Marsden.

A galaxy of dark stars from the modern musical world are also represented, with original words from the likes of Tom Araya (Slayer), Pete Steele (Type O Negative), Sharon del Adel (Within Temptation), Glen Benton (Deicide), Ville Valo (HIM), James Hetfield (Metallica), Adam 'Nergal' Darski (Behemoth), Bard 'Faust' Eithun (ex-Emperor), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), Jason Mendonca (Akercocke), Andi Sex Gang (Sex Gang Children), King of Hell (Gorgoroth), Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost), Chad Gray (Mudvayne), Le'rue Delashay (Christian Death), Montalo (Witchfynde), Jinx Dawson (Coven), Metatron (The Meads of Asphodel), John Bush (Armored Saint), Andrea Haugen (Nebelhexe), and many more.

His previous 3 books received wide acclaim, 'Kerrang!' magazine dubbing Baddeley 'King Goth'.

His status as a pin-up among the Gothic fraternity, and talent for a provocative sound-bite have combined with Cradle of Filth's popularity to earn him countless front covers in both the worldwide rock media. The band has been the subject of features in influential journals, and appeared in numerous TV programmes, including being the subject of a BBC documentary. He has also starred in the cult British horror film Cradle of Fear, cementing the band's substantial crossover with horror fandom.

Controversy sometimes seems like the name of the game in modern music, and Cradle of Filth have certainly attracted far more than their share in the years since the band's formation in 1991. They found themselves in the thick of the violent controversy that engulfed the Satanic black metal subgenre in 1992-3, ultimately propelling it to the forefront of the metal world a decade later...

...Cradle of Filth, particularly as embodied by founder member Mr. Filth himself, have made a career out of breaking the rules and doing the unexpected. A leading band in a musical form best known for being perennially unfashionable on the one hand, and unacceptably offensive on the other, Cradle of Filth were profiled in a 2000 issue of the trendy style journal The Face, and collaborated with the BBC...

...If, as some purists maintain, being true to black metal is about being defiantly individualistic, and refusing to run with the pack, then none have followed that ethos more dogmatically than Cradle of Filth, even if they've long since outgrown the subgenre's musical boundaries...

...Dani has frequently stated that Cradle of Filth's favourite flaw is over-ambition, and this book aims to emulate that failing. In the pages that follow, we shall dig deep. Not just to the band's foundation, or even to the formative years of its founder, but back to the very roots of the ideas, events, and art that informed their inspiration. Using Cradle of Filth's discography as a roadmap, The Gospel of Filth folds out into an atlas of the dark side in all of its multifarious forms. Dani will act as our principal pathfinder, his insight and commentary peppering the pages in sidebars throughout the book, excerpts from his poetry prefacing each chapter. But we will also be consulting a comprehensive cabal of relevant guides, from fellow members of the Filth, to other leading musicians, alongside a rogues' gallery of fellow travellers whose knowledge can cast light on the route into our culture's heart of darkness. It's a unique undertaking, and we can only hope that The Gospel of Filth proves as entertaining, illuminating, and challenging as the unique entity known as Cradle of Filth itself,
