Review:
This book will be very helpful and motivating to students with high-functioning autism and Asperger s. It will help them organize their thoughts and understand both themselves and others, and in the process develop important advocacy strategies. I recommend it for students on the spectrum who have good reading skills. --Temple Grandin, Ph.D., author, Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism and Thinking in Pictures and Other Reports from My Life with Autism

This comprehensive curriculum with its ready-to-use forms and activities is founded on both research and practice, making it a highly recommended tool for preparing individuals with autism spectrum and related disorders, starting in middle school, to lead independent, self-affirming and happy lives. The author s preliminary research shows that the curriculum may also be adapted for use with students with limited or no verbal communication skills, thus filling a significant gap in self-determination resources for this population. --Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D., The Ziggurat Group, author and internationally known presenter and researcher

This exciting and unique curriculum fills a critical gap for educators, parents, and others who support individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and related conditions. Its readable, personal communication style establishes a curricular framework that is enhanced by engaging illustrations, collaborative projects, and links to the broader autism community. By using tools for self-analysis, including Social and Sensory Scans, individuals with ASD begin a process of experiential learning that is easily generalizable to new social situations and environments. Dr. Paradiz has integrated her own perspectives as an adult with Asperger Syndrome and a parent of a son with autism with those of other professionals in ways that make the ISA Curriculum an essential resource for adolescents and adults with ASD and those who advocate for them in school and community. --Andrea M. Spencer, Ph.D., associate dean for Academic Affairs, Bank Street College of Education
