Since the donation to the French government of thousands of photographic images from Pablo Picasso's personal estate, the extent to which photography influenced the work of the artist is now recognized by scholars to be of great importance in understanding the artist's entire oeuvre. This richly illustrated catalog, based on research for three exhibitions by the Musée Picasso in Paris, presents a unique and insightful view into Picasso's relationship with the photographic arts. Photographs from as early as the turn of the century contributed to Picasso's figurative depictions as well as to his major cubist interpretations. Picasso's collection included 19th-century portraits, as well as postcards with colonial themes and ethnic groups in traditional costume. His voracious appetite for experimentation led him to push the medium to unorthodox extremes, including superimposed photographs, cliché-verres, photo-based engravings, collages, photograms and original drawings on photographs, and photographic cutouts.
