Nicolas Copernic (1473-1543) chanoine, médecin et astronome polonais, est célèbre pour avoir développé et défendu la théorie de l’héliocentrisme selon laquelle le Soleil se trouve au centre de l’Univers et, la Terre tourne autour de lui, contre la croyance répandue que cette dernière était centrale et immobile. Les conséquences de cette théorie dans le changement profond des points de vue scientifique, philosophique et religieux qu’elle impose sont baptisées révolution copernicienne. Si ses OEuvres complètes sont en cours de publication en Allemagne (Verlag), il n’existait en français qu’une traduction partielle des Révolutions des orbes célestes, par Alexandre Koyré, pour les éditions Diderot (1998, épuisée).
