Nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums des Benediktinerstifts Kremsmünster 1818-26 studierte S., Sohn eines Leinenwebers und Flachshändlers, von 1826 an Jura in Wien. Neben dem Jurastudium, das er nicht abschloss, malte und zeichnete er und beschäftigte sich mit Mathematik, den Naturwissenschaften und der Literatur. Er verdiente seinen Unterhalt durch Privatunterricht, die Suche nach einer Anstellung blieb vergeblich. 1837 heiratete er die Putzmacherin Amalie Mohaupt; 1847 nahm das kinderlose Paar eine sechsjährige Nichte auf. Nach dem ersten Erfolg seiner Erzählungen (1840) und durch die Verbindung mit dem Prager Verleger Gustav Heckenast verbesserte sich seine ¿nanzielle Lage. Nach mehr als 20 Jahren in Wien zog S. 1848 nach Linz; hier empfahl er sich - zunächst Anhänger der Revolution - durch regierungstreue Artikel. 1850 wurde er Schulrat, 1853 auch Landeskonservator für Oberösterreich.
