Januar 1890 in Berlin, studierte dort und in Genf Jura und promovierte 1915 in Jena. Seit 1929 hielt sich Tucholsky in Schweden auf, wo er in Hindås am 21. Dezember 1935 aus dem Leben schied. Ab 1911 hat Tucholsky kontinuierlich kultur- und zeitkritische Glossen, satirische Gedichte und Theaterrezensionen veröffentlicht, zunächst vorwiegend im sozialdemokratischen Vorwärts, dann häufig auch in der 1905 von S. Jacobsohn gegründeten Schaubühne (ab 1918 Weltbühne). Schon die ersten Artikel gegen Militarismus, Chauvinismus und reaktionäres Spießertum zeigen Tucholskys Begabung für polemische Zuspitzung. Der Tenor seiner Beiträge wird zunehmend schärfer, er attackiert die rechtslastige Justiz der Weimarer Republik, polemisiert gegen die Dolchstoßlegende und verfasst antimilitaristische Gedichte, zum Beispiel das Gebet nach dem Schlachten.
