First developed by Leonhard Rost in 1926, the hypothesis of the so-called Succession Narrative of David represents a landmark in the history of Old Testament research. Rost's identification of the succession theme as literary leitmotiv in 2 Sam 9-20 and 1Kgs 1-2 opened new vistas into an account which he recognized as a major literary composition of the early monarchic period. During the last decades, Rost's thesis has come under attack, not least in the wake of the reorientation of studies on the formation of the Pentateuch. A historiographical work of the 10th century BCE seems more and more unlikely to many, and the literary independence of the Succession Narrative has repeatedly been questioned. In order to clarify the issues and positions, the Swiss Society for Ancient Near Eastern Studies convened a symposium held in Berne in February 1997. In the present volume which results from this symposium, a number of renowned scholars offer their interpretations of the Succession Narrative, thus conveying a representative overview of the main options present in today's debate.
