He goes on exploratory journeys of places in our recollection, searching out both the real as well as the imaginary sites of the memory. His performances, drawings, films, and installations direct attention to things that have been forgotten or are in the process of being forgotten. In his research, Herold deliberately chooses paths less traveled, pursuing the traces of history down to the last detail. One of his best-known projects, Heldenfriedhof (Heroes' graveyard), is a creative exploration of a contemporary artistic myth.
