Die kühne Architektur erregte bereits in den Jahren seiner Entstehung weltweit Aufsehen. 1928/29 war der "Scheibengasometer" eine bewunderungswürdige technische Neuerung. Als Finale der IBA, ein halbes Jahr vor dem Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts, realisieren nun Christo und Jeanne-Claude von Mai bis Oktober 1999 The Wall. 13 000 übereinander gestapelte Ölfässer durchtrennen den gesamten Durchmesser des Oberscheibenraums diagonal wie eine Wand. Die Arbeit baut - wie viele andere Projekte des Künstlerpaares - auf früheren, oft Jahrzehnte zurückliegenden Arbeiten auf. 1961 stapelten sie Ölfässer und Verpackungen im Kölner Hafen, 1962 schufen sie den Eisernen Vorhang- Mauer aus Ölfässern in der Rue Visconti in Paris. Im Unterscheibenraum werden außerdem zwei weltbekannte Projekte der Christos, The Umbrellas und Wrapped Reichstag (Verhüllter Reichstag), anhand von Christos Zeichnungen, Modellen und Objekten sowie Photographien von Wolfgang Volz dokumentiert.
