Book Description: LIT Verlag. Paper. Leading European and North American scholars of law and ethics in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible bring their work together in this volume. Commemorating Gerhard von Rad, on the centennial of his birth, these studies were originally presented at a special international colloquium that took place in Heidelberg, Germany, on October 18û21, 2001. The articles, which appear in German and English, have since been expanded for publication. Paying homage to the multiple dimensions of von Rad's ground-breaking work on the Pentateuch, these studies cover five different themes. Included in section I, "What Endures of von Rad's Interpretation of the Deuteronomistic History?" are contributions by Georg Braulik, Udo Rⁿterswà rden, and Timo Veijola. In section II, "The Decalogue," are studies by Frank-Lothar Hossfeld and Siegfried Kreuzer. Section III, "The History of Biblical Law as the History of Interpretation," contains articles by Bernard M. Levinson, Douglas Dance, William Morrow, and Joachim Schaper. Section IV, "What Does an Ethics of the Old Testament Accomplish?" includes contributions by Frank Crⁿsemann, Walter Dietrich, and Hans-Christoph Schmitt. Section V is devoted to the implications of von Rad's work for contemporary social theory and sociology of religion. Entitled "Is the Old Testament Necessary as the Moral Foundation for a Modern Social Ethics?" this unit includes studies by Eilert Herms and Eckart Otto. The volume includes Eckart Otto's general introduction, which draws together the various themes addressed by the individual articles, as well as indexes of biblical citations and scholars.
