Cette importante monographie thématique réunit, à l'occasion d'une exposition allemande et française, tous les aspects de son travail pour l'édition - livres personnels (50 Photographien, Begegnugen.) et anthologies - et pour la presse - Atlantis, Reisen, Zürcher Illustrierte, Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Réalisme, sensualité, compassion et poésie : 142 photographies en noir et blanc, la plupart à pleine page, prises entre 1927 et 1956 en Allemagne, Angleterre, Belgique, France (magnifiques tableaux parisiens nocturnes.), Italie et Suisse mais aussi en Indonésie et en Egypte. Son reportage le plus connu est sans doute Inseln der Götter. Java, Sumatra, Bali, paru à Zurich en 1941 et traduit par Clairefontaine/La Guilde du Livre à Lausanne en 1954 sous le titre Iles des Dieux. Au début des années 50, avec Paul Senn, Werner Bischof et Jakob Tuggener, il fonde le Working Party of Swiss Photographers.
