The protagonists of the Viennese Actionist movement--Hermann Nitsch, Otto Muehl, Günter Brus and Rudolf Schwarzkogler--were all men, but their work grew out of a larger climate of Austrian and German body-related art and performance in which women played an equal role. Women were also present, of course, in the performances of Nitsch, Muehl et al, as creative collaborators.
