From the publisher: "Candida Höfer photographs rooms in public buildings such as spas, museums, universities and libraries. Each photograph is executed in a cooly detached style that echoes minimalist aesthetics and parallels the impersonal arrangements of furniture in the rooms themselves. The rooms are photographed without rearranging any of their furnishings so that the choice of a point of view is the only compositional device employed by the artist Candida Höfer photographs rooms rather than architecture: [s]ubtle individuality and responsiveness to the particular atmosphere of each room are essential characteristics of her work. Choosing not to address the theme of looking at history, but to enact it through the acknowledgement of her own position within the rooms, she implies a notion of the past as something the meaning of which is forever altered by one's own present condition and choices. Without glamorizing her subject or her practice, she addresses the authority implied by any organization of space with an eye that is neither visionary nor accusing, but direct, matter of fact, and slightly amused.
