Die bäuerlichen Aufgebote der zu Fuß kämpfenden Eidgenossen schlagen die habsburgischen Ritterheere am Morgarten 1315 und bei Sempach 1386. Luzern, Zürich, Zug, Glarus und Bern schließen sich dem Dreiländerbund im 14. Jahrhundert an, und die Tagsatzung gilt als oberstes Bundesorgan der Konföderation, die sich 1499 militärisch gegen den Reichsverband behauptet und aus diesem 1648 im Westfälischen Frieden entlassen wird.
