Einband gering berieben. - John Phillips (1914), journaliste et photographe à Life, découvre l'œuvre de Saint-Exupéry en 1939, alors qu'il effectue un reportage en Amérique du Sud sur les traces de l'Aéropostale. Il rencontre l'auteur du Petit Prince à Alger, en 1943, et lui obtient l'autorisation de voler à nouveau que lui avait retirée le commandement américain. Il passe avec lui et ses compagnons d'escadrille vingt jours à la .base d'Alghero, enmai 1944. Le 31 juillet, Saint-Exupéry est porté "disparu". // Am 31. Juli 1944 startete Saint-Exupéry morgens zu seinem planmäßig letzten Aufklärungsflug in einer Lockheed P-38 Lightning (Registriernummer 42-68223) in Richtung Grenoble, kehrte aber nicht zurück, sondern blieb verschollen. Als Ursache seines Verschwindens wurden verschiedene Möglichkeiten ins Auge gefasst: Abschuss, technischer Defekt, aber auch Selbstmord, denn diesem Flug sollten anschließend keine weiteren folgen und Saint-Exupéry war stark depressiv, wie Briefe aus der Zeit belegen.
