Offered here SIGNED by the artist and in AS NEW condition is Bill Jay's "61 Pimlico," published in 1998 by Nazraeli Press. This is a hardcover book with cloth boards and pictorial dust jacket. It contains 96 pages with 9 tipped-in black-and-white plates and text by Bill Jay. The book measures 9 x 6 inches. Purporting to be the secret journal of a Victorian-era photographer, "61 Pimlico" is presented by Jay as a sort of found object. It tells the story of Henry Hayler, a man whose nude photographs were confiscated and destroyed by the authorities. We are told that this is a reproduction, with notes from Jay, of Hayler's journal and the photographs hidden within. Of course, the photographs and writings contained within are in fact the work of Jay himself, spinning a deeply engrossing tale of persecution in Victorian England. The photographs themselves have been carefully crafted and appear so genuinely of another age that it is nearly impossible to tell their true origins. Basing his work on an actual photographer and peppering the book clues as to the true nature of the work throughout, he creates a fictional past reminiscent of the playful work of Joan Fontcuberta.
