Texte in englischer Sprache. - When I addressed him as Sir Anthony, in accordance with his title, he remarked that this honorary title is very nice and well meant, but that it is especially useful when making a reservation in a restaurant — for often he then gets a table at the window. So his good humour is not only written on his face and shows in his personality, but also in the character of his sculpture. In 1998, together with my wife and the head of the museum, C. Sylvia Weber, I had the Chance to visit Anthony Caro in his London studio, where he was busy working on parts of his Last Judgement sculpture. I was immediately intrigued. After having seen the model of the whole Installation that he intended, 1 was moved and enthusiastic about the ambition, depth and scope of this work. The Last Judgement will be shown to the public for the firnt time as part of the 1999 Venice Biennale. Without doubt it is one of the most important sculptures Anthony Caro has made: for in addition to its fine details, it expresses, with its challenging three-dimensionality, a depth of artistic creation that goes beyond the religious subject matter and will remain valid for all time. Due to the current conflict in Kosovo — only a few flight minutes away from Venice — Caro's work has gained a dimension none of us Gould haue foreseen. If there will euer be a Last Judgement or Divine justice, these crimes will neuer be forgotten. A work of art like this can only be created by a man who can rise above the present and is able to dedicate his art to the whole of mankind without regard to rate, religion or culture.
