This book is the first one in the area of student support services in India, a sincere attempt to collect ideas and concepts from available literature in the field of Open and Distance Education and presents them in a coherent manner. In fact, this is a descriptive work on the concepts and principles of Open and Distance Education, which aims to fulfill objectives of text book/monograph and to update the archives and experience in the Open University system. This book consists of two sections of three chapters each. The first section deals with the concept of Open and Distance Education, its features, some early initiatives taken in India in this field and some popular viewpoints. The second chapter is on Indira Gandhi National Open University and its organizational structure with special emphasis on objectives and functions, pedagogical experiences and some of its landmark initiatives. The third chapter is on learner support system in Indian context. The second section deals with a survey conducted as part of the doctoral work. Chapter four in second section deals with the methodology of the study and chapters five to thirteen deal with various academic operations of student support service.
