The author has been engaged research on human development for last seven years. There is very few research work relating to Human development or quality of life in North east India in general and Assam in particular. The turmoil in the region is more a outcome of low level of which has never caught the attention of planners and policy makers in the region. The book deals with the status of human development in Assam and suggests some policy guidelines which will be the policy markers. A detailed analysis of district level human development as measured by Human Develop-ment Index (HDI) has been worked out. This is study on six selected districts in Assam which convers about twenty five percent of total districts. Samples were collected by stratified random sampling method and influence of some important factors which affect human development in a significant way is carried is carried out through regression technique. Most the districts in the study except two are having HDI lower than state average. Moreover, the districts of Assam are lagging far behind the districts of Kerala or Tamil Nadu in terms of HDI shows the widening inequality in quality of life among states which is a serious matter of concern. The present volume is a detail analysis of different dimensions of quality of such as literacy, health services, levels of income, infrastructure, housing facilities, drinking water facilities etc. in the selected districts of Assam. This book through light on important social sector issues in the state which is of urgent concern. The finding will be equally applicable to some other lagging behind states in India.
