Este libro es Vargas Llosa es tanto una relectura de Madame Bovary como una indagación que el novelista peruano hace de si mismo al hilo de su identificación con el personaje decimononico. Es decir, que este libro también hubiera podido titularse "Emma Bovary soy yo".
