Una de las formas del cuento de la Cenicienta más conocidas en occidente es la del francés Charles Perrault, que escribió en 1697 una versión de la historia transmitida mediante tradición oral; la de Perrault se conoce con el título Cendrillon ou La petite pantoufle de verre (Cenicienta o El zapatito de cristal). Anterior a ella es la del italiano Giambattista Basile: La Gata Cenicienta (en italiano, La Gatta Cenerentola; en el original napolitano, La gatta cennerentola), que bebe de la tradición juliana; en esa zona, se habla el napolitano, y en ese idioma está escrito el cuento de Basile. El cuento forma parte de la obra Pentamerón.
