PHILIP-LORCA DICORCIA: STREETWORK 1993-1997 - Rare Fine Copy of The First And Only Edition (ISBN: 8474818877) Dicorcia, Philip-Lorca Quantity Available: 1
Book Description: Salamanca, Spain: Ediciones Universidad De Salamanca, 1998. Soft cover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 72 pages. Published in 1998. Retrospective collection of color photographs. One of the greatest art photography books of the 20th century. The first and only edition. Published in a very small and limited print run as a softcover original only. Philip-Lorca DiCorcia's single most rare book. A brilliant production by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia: Oversize-volume format in very wide oblong shape. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia. Essay by Jose Luis Brea. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Salamanca, Spain to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition held at the Centro de Fotografia de la Universidad de Salamanca in 1998. Presents some of the finest, most representative, and most influential photographs by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia. What sets the book apart from the other seminal collections of DiCorcia's work is that as produced, it elegantly approximates the monumental horizontal scale of the actual photographs without overreaching, and permits the viewer to somehow experience, not just look at, the images individually and as part of a larger whole. By comparison, the ground-breaking 1995 MOMA exhibition catalog, for example, does resemble a reference manual. DiCorcia's photography is influenced primarily by film-making, which he divides into two styles: The first is profoundly suggestive of a wider world beyond the frame (as in Jean Renoir and Francois Truffaut). The second is a closed world, where one's gaze is completely focussed on the frame because everything is contained within it (as in Alfred Hitchcock and Robert Bresson). The dominant tradition in photography has been much closer to the first cinematic style (as in Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand), in street photography that feels effortless and spontaneous, alludes to the city-at-large and ultimately, to our world. DiCorcia admires this great tradition enormously. Still, a whole body of work already exists, and it could not be improved upon. Instead, he feels that the opportunity for an ambitious photographer (like himself) lies in creating private worlds, his as well as other human beings'. Hence his meticulously directed photographs and photo-tableaux, with their precise, deliberate, and static yet ineffable ambience, a universe unto itself, whose possibilities are defined solely by Philip-Lorca DiCorcia. His stated wish is that this willed omniscience enables him to hint at the mysterious and sublime: "Photography is a foreign language everyone thinks he speaks" (Philip-Lorca DiCorcia). A "must-have" title for Philip-Lorca DiCorcia collectors. This title is now very highly collectible. This is one of few copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Copies available online command as much as $1250 even if they have serious flaws. A rare copy thus. 25 color plates. One of the most important and influential living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PHILIP-LORCA DICORCIA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 8474818877. no. Streetwork, 1993-1997 (ISBN: 8474818877) Dicorcia, Philip-Lorca Quantity Available: 1
Book Description: Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca, 1999. Soft cover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. FINE CONDITION, OUT-OF-PRINT. This is a softcover with a pictorial wrap. It contains 72 pages, with numerous color illustrations, and measures 13 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches. Published by Universidad de Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain, 1999. These ultra-vibrant photographs are a thrilling blend of documentary-style photography with the lush aesthetics of staged settings. Philip-Lorca DiCorcia managed to capture candid images of people on the street, and imbued this with such high-production value by hiding specially-designed lighting beneath them. The product is phenomenal: realistic and futuristic at the same time, these subjects are so alive with their own unselfconscious energy and then, through the lighting effect, appear almost illustrated, as though frozen in time, eerily like wax figures. DiCorcia has truly pioneered a new style of street photography, managing to blur the line between the real and the fictitious and jarring expectations with each unearthly photograph.
