Per tutta la vita, Oskar Kokoschka ( 1886-1980) ha frequentato i musicisti più celebri del suo tempo come i compositori Arnold Schònberg e Alban Berg, il direttore d'orchestra Wilhelm Furtwangler o il violoncellista catalano Pablo Casals, di cui ha realizzato numerosi ritratti. La Bibliothèque Centrale di Zurigo conserva innumerevoli carteggi tra Kokoschka e gli amici musicisti, i cui estratti più importanti sono pubblicati per la prima volta in quest'opera. Per gli amici, l'artista ha creato incredibili scenografie e costumi per celebri opere, presentati anch'essi in quest'opera grazie alla collaborazione della fondazione Kokoschka. Vi si trovano, per esempio, le scenografie realizzare per "II flauto magico" andato in scena nel 1955 a Salisburgo e nel 1965 al Grand Théàtre di Ginevra, una serie di bozzetti a pastello per le scenografie del "Ballo in maschera" di Verdi realizzate per il famoso festival del Maggio Fiorentino del 1963 e un album di schizzi per una messa in scena del "Fidelio" di Beethoven. La sua pittura, evidentemente, è il riflesso di questo vitale contesto. Con l'aiuto di alcuni quadri, il catalogo presenta anche il tema preferito dell'artista: la descrizione dell'effetto della musica sull'animo umano.
