Ce superbe catalogue retrace la courte vie et l'immense oeuvre des Frères de Limbourg - Hermann, Paul et Jean, nés entre 1385 et 1390 à Nimègue, Pays-bas -, issus d'une famille de peintres spécialisés dans les blasons, qui devinrent des peintres et des enlumineurs de très grand renom. Les historiens d'art leur attribuent l'enluminure, à partir de 1402 et à la demande de Philippe II de Bourgogne, d'une Bible Moralisée, maintenant conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Par contre, l'on sait avec certitude que les Frères de Limbourg ont enluminé entre 1404 et 1409 un livre d'heures, connu sous le nom de Belles Heures du Duc de Berry, pour Jean Ier de Berry, frère du Duc de Bourgogne, grand collectionneur de pierres précieuses et de pièces d'orfèvrerie. Le duc de Berry fut si satisfait de ce travail qu'il commanda aux Frères de Limbourg ce qui allait devenir l'un des chefs-d'oeuvre de l'enluminure médiévale, Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. Les Frères de Limbourg ne purent achever ce livres d'heures : la peste les emporta en 1416 à quelques mois d'intervalle. Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry, conservé au Musée Condé du château de Chantilly, fut achevé en 1485 par Jean Colombe à la demande de la Maison de Savoie. Quinze textes relatent la vie, l'oeuvre, l'influence des Frères de Limbourg, ainsi que le contexte artistique de leur époque : 210 reproductions, la plupart en couleurs. -CATALOGUE : plus de 160 pièces en couleurs - enluminures, peintures, dessins, médailles, sculptures. - de ou attribuées aux Frères de Limbourg et oeuvres d'artistes identifiés ou anonymes.
