Grade 2-6-- A simple yet profound story about an old man's search for companionship. The man is lonely, misunderstood and unaccepted by the townspeople because he "was too little. And they thought he looked much too silly." He places an ad for a friend and waits for results. On the tenth day, a bedraggled dog approaches him and a relationship of love, loyalty, and trust begins. One year later, the pup is distracted by a little girl. The old man experiences feelings of jealousy, rejection, and low self-esteem until he discovers that both the dog and little girl welcome his affections. Appealing black-and-white, pen-and-ink sketches appear on each page and reflect the moods and feelings particularly through the characters' expressive facial features. The natural events of the seasons such as flowers blooming and birds singing to signal happiness are a nice use of imagery to enhance the theme. Although designated an easy reader, the layout and subtle sophistication of the text belie that usage. Quietly moving and reminiscent of Silverstein's The Giving Tree (HarperCollins, 1964), this is one of those rare picture books that is appropriate for readers at various levels.
