Ghambageu. the apotheosized cultural hero of the Sonjo of Northern Tanzania, has traditionally had many affinities with Jesus. During the last six decades of Christian missionary efforts among the Sonjo, Ghambageu has increasingly developed into a Jesus-like figure. Christian churches have been remarkably unsuccessful in gaining active converts among the Sonjo. In their irrigation-based agricultural communities, culture, religion, economy and political power are closely linked together. The competition over the Sonjo souls is thus not only a religious issue but permeates the whole of the societal structure. For the Sonjo, the wenamijie, their traditional leaders with he power over the distribution of water, are remarkable social and religious actors. Limiting the spread of Christianity, or at least its social impact, has been a clear goal of the wenamijie, which they have successfully achieved through this "inverted conextualization". From their point of view, the change in the spiritual basis of their people would jeopardize the very survival of their communities in an inhospitable natural and cultural environment.
