This is the very scarce hardcover with dustjacket edition, published in a limited First Edition of 5,000 copies only. The book was published to coincide with an exhibition of Joaquin Clausell's paintings at the Museo Nacional de Arte, July to October 1995. Joaquín Clausell (1866-1935) was a Mexican impressionist painter. He was born in Campeche, studied law, and later became a journalist. He was opposed to Porfirio Díaz's regime and persecuted by the authorities; he left Mexico and went to New York City and then moved to Paris, where he met Émile Zola and painters such as Claude Monet. Deeply influenced by them, as well as by older French painters such as Gustave Courbet, he returned to Mexico to pursue a career in painting. He is considered the first painter to introduce Impressionism in Mexico. This volume includes 152 of Clausell's works, reproduced mostly in color, plus accompanying text in Spanish language only. Hardcover blue cloth book with dustjacket, 192 pages, size 9 1/2" x 11 3/8". Fine very close to new condition, save for one 1" square surface paper tear on the front endpage; no prior owner handwriting or text marking, no smoke or other unpleasant odor. [2384-a2404].
