Book Description: Cosmopoli for the Kama Shastra Society of London and Benares 1885, 1885. First edition, early issue with the "W" misprint for the "R" in the postscript to the preface. (Penzer) The first printing, privately issued and distributed numbered only 4 to 6 copies. It has always been unobtainable thus. 8vo, full vellum with a gilt border on upper cover and lettering on spine, beveled edges. xvi, 144, index. A fine and large copy internally with edges uncut, some rubbing of the gilt on the upper cover and time mellowing to the spine panel, upper corner of free end-leaf clipped, small split to rear lower joint. VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION. BurtonÕs ANANGA-RANGA or KAMA SHASTRA is a translation of a Sanskrit erotic text from the 16th century. It is a graphic sex manual for marriage partners, believed to be written by the poet Kalyana Malla, whose intention was to offer techniques to keep sex interesting throughout the entire span of a marriage. Burton and his publishing partner Arbuthnor commissioned the Sanskrit scholar Bhagvanlal Indraji to translate a rough draft from the Sanskrit. Burton rewrote the draft, polishing the language and adding his own personal views on sexuality and gender roles. "Thus, many sections of the English version of the Kama Shastra come not from the Sanskrit but from Burton's fertile brain.". The resulting text includes many annotations and embellishments by Burton, a curious collection of charts by Kalyana Malla of the different types of women and where each should be touched for maximum enjoyment, a description of herbal concoctions for fertility and sexual maladies, and recommendations for bedroom decoration to keep the mind uplifted and undistracted for lovemaking. Burton began developing his theories of human sexuality early in life while stationed in India. Thirty years later he was able to publish his views out of concern "that not only were Englishmen in general inept at sex; so were 'most English women' who 'never really learned the real delight of carnal copulation', an ignorance 'to be remedied only by a constant and intelligent study of the Ananga Ranga Scriptures'" (Rice, p.52) Originally, the book was to be published in 1873 under the name of ÒKama ShastraÓ or the ÒHIndoo Art of LoveÓ, but only 4-6 copies were actually produced. The printer was offended by the pornographic nature of the book and absolutely refused to print it. However, after the successful publication of the ÒKama SutraÓ, Burton brought it out again in 1885 with 3 consecutive printings. Unfortunately, it was not destined to receive the same dramatic reception or enduring interest as the notorious ÒKama SutraÓ. Bookseller Inventory # 21156

Book Description: (Stage of the Bodiless One), or The Hindu Art of Love. (Ars Amoris Indica.) First edition, third issue. 8vo. Original vellum, bevelled edges, spine gilt, single gilt border to boards, somewhat soiled with small section of vellum missing from upper board (55 by 30mm), internally fine, presented in cloth drop-back box. xvi, 144pp. Cosmpoli, for the Kama Shastra Society (London & Benares), 1885. "In the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, the translation appears under the generic name of Kama-Shastra, which we first adopted, and the reader is told that only four copies exist for reasons best known to the printer. This is so far true that the limited supply has hitherto prevented the public deriving any benefit from our labours. We now take advantage of an offer made by a well-known house in Cosmopoli, and produce a reprint for PRIVATE CIRCULATION ONLY, with many additions and emendations." Although this work was first published in extremely limited numbers in 1873 (see above) under the title "Kama-Shastra", twelve years passed before Burton was able to find a publisher brave enough to reprint the text. The resulting Ananga-Ranga is essentially a manual for love-making, thought to have been written by the poet Kalyana Malla. Whilst the descriptions are somewhat graphic, the aim was simple: if a man is able to vary and heighten the pleasures of sex within marriage, there would be no need to seek it elsewhere. Not surprisingly, given the date of the original work, it has an entirely phalocentric outlook, the wife being little more than a sex object: "the husband by varying the enjoyment of his wife, may live with her as with thirty-two different women, ever varying the enjoyment of her, and rendering satiety impossible." The "Ananga-Ranga" was the second of the five publications produced by the Kama Shastra Society, which was founded by Burton and Arbuthnot with the aim of publishing Eastern texts. They were, as Penzer coyly puts it, "chiefly of an erotic nature." However, unlike the notorious "Kama-Sutra", first published by Burton in parts in 1883, the "Ananga-Ranga" was not an immediate success. Penzer, p171-3; Casati, 73. Bookseller Inventory # TR28000

Book Description: Charles Carrington, Paris, 1907. Paris. Hardcover, 8vo. xviiii + 150 (+ iiipp Index & iiipp. adverts). Original gilt stamped white parchment boards. An early reprint of Burton's translation of this twelfth century Indian manual of sexual love, often likened to the Kama Sutra (from which part of it is apparently drawn). The work includes to appendicies, one Astrological, the other pharmaceutical. The latter comprises half-a-dozen recipes for aphrodisiacs etc., some of which are purportedly lethal. The Burton translation was originally published in an extremely limited edition 'for private circulation' in 1873, and subsequently reprinted by his 'Kama Shastra Society.' This early reprint was published by the notorious Paris based purveyour of erotica, Charles Carrington. From the library of Jean Michaud (1884 - 1961). Michaud was a composer, author, and occultist, who was deeply involved in esoteric circles in London from the 1920s through 1950s. He was personally acquainted with most of the esoteric 'luminaries' of that period, from Aleister Crowley, to Cyril Scott. Front endpaper dusty, and with an owner's name in pencil, otherwise internally clean. Boards a little bowed and somewhat discolored - as always - and with a few scratches to the spine. Still a Vg copy. Bookseller Inventory # 32970
