Book Description: Cosmopoli [London]: for the Kama Shastra Society of London and Benares, and for Private circulation only. , 1886. the half-title browned, pp. xv, 256, 8vo., orig. vellum over boards, backstrip with gilt lettering, covers with single gilt fillet borders, bevelled edges, fore- and lower edges uncut, a few small spots, very good It is perhaps understandable that this famous work on the Arab art of love, in essence a Sixteenth Century Islamic sex manual, has an erratic publishing history, although its popularity ensures that it is still published today. The Perfumed Garden was translated into French, and an edition of only 25 copies issued in 1876. Burtons English edition includes sections drawn directly from the original Arabic manuscript, which were not included in the French translation. According to Penzer there was an edition issued in parts of the English translation by Burton, also dated 1886, but it appears to be so rare that Penzer himself had never seen it. The above is the authorised as opposed to the pirated edition, which was issued in the same year, but with different spelling , Sheikh, on the title, and printed in different ink. (Penzer pp. 173-75). Bookseller Inventory # 43488
