Uploading Images
Adding images to your AbeBooks inventory is one of the best things you can do to help increase your sales. Listings that include a bookseller supplied image not only sell significantly faster but also for higher prices. Providing your own images can also result in fewer buyer complaints, since buyers see the book they are ordering in advance. AbeBooks allows sellers to provide up to 5 images per listing. Once your image has been processed, it will be associated with the corresponding listing and will be displayed in search results. Buyers can also filter their searches by Bookseller-supplied photos so your books will be displayed when buyers use this option. Features and Requirements
Naming Your Image Files Images uploaded by FTP must be named to correspond with the bookseller’s book ID of the listing with which it is to be associated, i.e. image 1234.jpg will be associated with the listing for vendor book ID 1234. If uploading multiple images for a single listing, each image must still be named to correspond with the book ID of the listing, but must also be appended with a suffix to differentiate image 1 from image 2, image 2 from image 3, etc. The suffix must take the form of _1. For example, multiple images for book ID 1234 would be named as follows:
The first image will be the main image, displayed in search results, and can be named either 1234_1.jpg or 1234.jpg. If images with both names are uploaded, the one with the suffix _1 will be used and the other will be ignored. Sellers uploading images through the Online Inventory Management System, or by providing image URLs in their book file, can follow the naming convention of their choice. Uploading Your Photos There are 3 ways to provide your images to us: Through the Online Inventory Management system, by FTP, and within your inventory upload files: Online Inventory Management System: 1. Sign on to your AbeBooks account with your email address and password. 2. Click on [Manage My Books & Images] in the 'My Books' section of the Menu. 3. Enter the search criteria of a specific listing, or leave all fields blank and click on the first “View Items” button to display your entire inventory. 4. Thumbnails of existing images, or placeholder icons when no image is present, will display in the left hand column. To upload or edit an image or images, click the “Update Images” link for that listing. 5. On the Update Images screen, you can either upload an image from your computer or provide the URL to the image. 6. Click [Browse for file] to upload an image from your computer ~OR~ Click “Add Image from URL” to enter a URL instead. 7. When you have completed entering your image(s), click [Upload Image(s)] and the upload process will begin. Keep in mind that if you are using very large images, the upload process may take some time, especially if your internet connection is slow. 8. Upon completion of the upload, you’ll receive confirmation that the images have been successfully uploaded. As with all inventory updates, it can take up to 24 hours after upload for the images to display online – we need this time to resize and index the images.
FTP: Rather than send each photo individually, you can zip several photos into one file and upload the zipped file through the [Upload a Book or Picture File] link in the 'My Books' section of your Members Menu. You can also upload your image file via your own FTP software, to ftp.abebooks.com. If using FTP software, you will be prompted to enter your AbeBooks User ID and Password, if they have not already been entered and saved. Inventory File Upload: Some inventory management tools support the use of image URLs within your book records. If you use such a tool, you can use this method to send your images to AbeBooks as well. Please contact Customer Support before you begin doing so, in order that we may ensure your account is correctly configured to receive and process the image URLS.
