He shows how they use these clues and hypothesize from their findings. Captioned, full-color, watercolor-washed illustrations artfully peel back sections of skin, giving readers a glimpse of interior organs and various body systems (though there's little mention of reproduction). Smaller cartoon diagrams compare the dinosaurs to familiar machines or architecture to explain how their bodies worked. A chart in the form of a giant slide shows the dinosaurs' decline; it's a nice idea, but it ends up obscuring the information instead of clarifying it. Like this team's Inside the Whale and Other Animals (Doubleday, 1992), this book belongs in all natural history collections.
