Book Description: Izobrazitelnoye Iskusstvo Publishers, Moscow, 1987. Fabric Hardback. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Various Artists (illustrator). 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book Description : 1987, 1st Edition fabric hardback with colour reproduction of part of a folk painting to front board; original dustjacket and slipcase. The colourfully painted household articles of the Northern Dvina were in great demand in Russia but until fairly recently their provenance was a closely guarded secret. This plentifully illustrated volume reveals the folk traditions, history and characteristics of this art. Many of the paintings adorned the distaff which played an important role in a woman's marriage and married life, but there are other (sometimes ornately) carved artefacts which were also painted (such as jugs, and berry baskets). All the artefacts had a practical use in Russian daily life and the paintings depict scenes and narratives from daily life (such as wedding ceremonies, encounters, sleigh riding) or stylised yet vital motifs from nature. Flamoyant motifs often frame and find contrast with charming, naive yet characterful scenes reminiscent of English art from the middle ages. 124 large colour reproductions with text in both English and Russian. Some b/w photographs of the region and peoples. Book Condition : near Fine - trace fading to head and foot of spine; gilding and picture intact, and fabric pristine; fep and ep have only a trace of yellowing; inner pages have original whiteness; slight smudging of ink to a page of the introductory text; binding tight and secure. DJ Condition : near Fine - several or so small creases infrequently appearing at edges; no other signs of wear. Slipcase is lightly scuffed in places with faces yellowed to a degree; circular colour design appearing perfect. Bookseller Inventory # 000593
