Item Description: Sohkyu Sha, Tokyo, 1986. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket as Issued. Black cloth covered boards as issued with embossed image of a raven on front board - fine condition, clean and tight. In the original cardboard slipcase with spine label (two one-inch breaks in the label). 132 pages with 62 full page b/w photos of ravens and other images. Japanese text. Clean and tight copy. Parr/Badger, The Photobook I, pp. 306. "The British Journal of Photography recently asked a panel of experts, including photographer Chis Killip and the writer Gerry Badger, to select their best photobook of the past 25 years. Surpisingly, perhaps, Nan Goldin's Ballad of Sexual Dependency, from 1986, came a close second to a much less well-known book, Masahisa Fukase's Karasu (Ravens), which was published the same year."( from an article in The Guardian, 24 May 2010 ). For the original British Journal of Photography poll go to their webiste and search the artist's name in search box. Our copy was purchased directly from the artist by the previous owner in 1987 in his studio. He signed it dramatically in bold silver Kanji script on the black flyleaf. These somber, even melacholy, images have become something of a legend. Following his wife leaving him in the 1970s, Fukase was taking a train to his native town and began photographing ravens perched along the poles and power lines near the tracks. This project became something of an obsession and continured for about 10 years, culminating in the 1986 publication of this book and exhibition of the original prints reproduced in it. It is quite rare. Signed by the Aritst. Bookseller Inventory # 040893

Item Description: Sokyusha, 1986. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Karasu (Ravens) by Masahisa Fukase is a 10-year pursuit of ravens in his native Japan in 63 black and white photographs. Fukase tries to capture the culture of Japan amongst portraits of melancholy cats, girls, a solitary homeless man and an unkindness of ravens. Following them from the site of the Hiroshima Bomb and his hometown of Hokkaido and to his estranged wife, in the final portrait, who left him after a marriage of 13 years. No two images are paired together, with one image following another in a square format with neutral white borders throughout. Cited as 'an obscure masterpiece' by the British Journal of Photography, their panel of experts nominated this as the most important photography book of the past 25 years. Condition is used but very good; comes with original glassine dust jacket and cardboard case. Bookseller Inventory # 000083

Item Description: Yokohama: Sokyusha (1986), 1986. First Edition. Square quarto. Many images shot from a train window as a disconsolate Fukase traveled to his hometown after divorcing his wife. Although ravens are the obvious motif, Fukase's land and snowscape images are particularly compelling. (Parr / Badger, v1, 306; Auer 663; Aperture 232-237). Fine copy in blind-stamped black boards, in the complete original glassine with a closed jagged tear along the top of the rear panel, housed in the close to fine cardboard slipcase. Item Description: Sokyu-sha, Tokyo, 1986. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. This is a first edition, first printing of Masahisa Fukase's masterpiece "Karasu (Ravens)" published by Sokyu-sha, Tokyo in 1986. The book features 62 striking black and white single page photographs of mostly ravens in different settings. The somber quality of this unusually affecting work has been attributed to Fukase's despair after his marriage ended in divorce. Whatever it's roots, there is no questioning the emotional impact of this collection of images. A panel of five experts convened by the British Journal of Photography selected Karasu as the greatest photobook of the past 25 years. In volume one of "The Photobook: A History", Parr and Badger write: "Ravens" is the post-Provoke masterpiece of Japanese photobooks . a technical as well as an aesthetic tour-de-force . Its strength is that it works on so many levels-graphically, descriptively, technically, and metaphorically . Even though Fukase makes his pictures in bad light and bad weather, never bothering with technical niceties, the results are both luminous and beautiful ¿ Fukase's cry of despair is perhaps one of the most romantic of photobooks . but ultimately it is Fukase's masterly handling of the narrative and rhythm that makes it so memorable." This was Fukase¿s last monograph. He went into a coma in 1992 after suffering a brain injury and passed away in 2012. Measuring approximately 10.25 x 10.25 inches, the book is bound in black cloth covered boards with a blind-stamped image of a raven on the front and rear. The book is housed in the original cardboard slipcase with a square of Kanji that contains the title and other information. The book is in FINE condition with no notable flaws. The slipcase is in Near FINE+ condition with minor soiling and wear. Overall, this is an exceptional copy of one of the highpoints of 20th century photographic literature. Cited in The Photobook: A History by Parr & Badger and Ryuichi Kaneko's reference work on Japanese Photobooks, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 1970s. Bookseller Inventory # 000101

Item Description: San Francisco, California, U.S.A.: Bedford Arts, San Francisco, California, U.S.A., 1991. Soft cover. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This title is offered in VERY FINE condition. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. It is a softcover book with photographically illustrated wraps. Features an introduction by David Travis and an afterword by Akira Hasegawa. 132 pages with 62 black-and-white reproductions. Measures 10 1/8 inches square. Artist Masahisa Fikase's tragic story is inexorably tied to this, his final monograph. The dissolution of the Artist's marriage in the late 70s left him emotionally crippled and he identified his pain with the image of the raven, an image frequently identified as a bad omen. It is difficult to put into words the despair conveyed through these photographs, mostly of ravens in different settings, and all in stark and grainy black-and-white. “The Solitude of Ravens,” originally published in Tokyo as “Karasu” (“Ravens”), this book “is a technical as well as an aesthetic tour-de-force. Even though Fukasi makes his pictures in bad light and bad weather, never bothering with technical niceties, the results are both luminous and beautiful,” note Parr & Badger in “The Photobook.” Several images here even suggest the Artist felt dead or longed for death. Sadly, Fukase went into a coma after a serious fall in 1992, leaving us with this profound testament to his sorrow. Parr & Badger conclude: “Fakase's cry of despair is perhaps one of the most romantic of photobooks.but ultimately in his Fukase's masterly handling of the narrative and rhythm that makes it so memorable.” This title is IN STOCK for immediate release.
