Item Description: The Viking Press, New York, NY, 1947. Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Book Club Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. This is John Steinbeck's 18th book. It was adapted to a film by the same name in 1957. The writing consists largely of adding characters to the plot and describing them; Steinbeck gets into their internal thoughts throughout the volume. The plot is placed in "Steinbeck country" with Alice and Juan owning a bus which they run from Rebel Corners to San Juan de la Cruz. Juan also works as a mechanic, and they own a lunch counter. As individuals converge to take the bus, some interesting interactions occur. As the bus is following its route, heavy rain takes out a bridge. After landing in a ditch, the driver asks his passengers if he should return to Rebel Corners or continue on. They decide to continue, so he leaves the bus to get help, not intending to return. The light brown cover has a blind impression of the bus in a ditch. There is a light damp stain at the top of the front cover, approximately 3" wide by 3/4" long. It does not go through to the pages. England may not have a monopoly on snobbery, but the nation is a past master in its practice, as Thackeray realized when he embarked on his priceless satirical account of the snobs of England. Serialized in Punch in 1846/7, his hilarious portraits covered the snob royal and aristocratic, the city, military and clerical snob, snobs on the continent, in the country and in the club, and many more varieties of the species. Snobs are always with us, and one pleasure of reading Thackeray's sparkling wit today is to recognize the awful immortals still with us. Includes endnotes. Illustrated. Bookseller Inventory # 003497

Item Description: New York Review of Books, New York, New York, U.S.A., 2002. Soft cover. Book Condition: New. No Jacket. From the slavic spelling of the title (pronounced Mardu Gorgeous) to the Maria Callas-like opera diva, she bursts like the most brilliant of comets onto the international opera scene, only to confront the deadly malice and black magic of her rivals. McCourt's first book, Mawrdew Czgowchwz actually acts as emcee of the text. Outrageous and uproarious, flamboyant and serious as only the most perfect frivolity can be, James McCourt's entrancing send-up of the world of opera has been a cult classic for more than a quarter-century. This comic tribute to the love of art is a triumph of art and love by a contemporary American master. 205 pages. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 002865
