Size: Octavo (standard book size). All edges gilt - bright, rich condition. This is a memorial tribute to H. Henry Baxter, January 18, 1818-February 17, 1884. Mr. Baxter was a railroad magnate, a bank founder, and quarry owner, and Adjutant General of the State of Vermont during the Civil War. Black leather, gilt lettering on cover, frontispiece of Baxter which may have been tipped in, or put back in after having been cut out. There is some foxing to the Baxter portrait with offsetting to the tissue. In a black paper covered hinged box with a label reading "Baxter Memorial" on the front. Box is chipped, in Good condition. Volumes I and II each have a small dent in the fore edges of the boards, Volumes III and IV have some faint spotting on the front covers, Volume IV has the top corners bumped, all volumes have some light toning to the endpapers. Interiors of all items are clean, no writing or marks, and the binding is sound. In a blue paper covered slipcase that is in Fair condition, bottom scuffed, corners bumped, back separated at top and bottom from the adjoining pieces some sun fading and overall scuffing/soil. ". . . went to Bridgton. . . sold 7 copies of Kane and 2 of Tennyson. All these subscriptions except one of the Kane were obtained after dinner. My commission on Kane is 37 1/2 cents, on Tennyson 25 cents. Deducting express bills and the expense of distributors this does not make a very showy days work. . ."
