About this Item

182 pp, 1 leaf; 103 figs. Recent boards, with original front wrapper (trimmed) mounted on front board. Very Good. First Edition. "In 1912, Théodore Tuffier . . . made the first attempt in man surgically to correct aortic stenosis. His patient was a young man with disabling symptoms due to aortic stenosis. He had planned to cut the aortic valve leaflets with a knife, but at the last moment he discovered that the anterior aortic wall was flaccid, so he invaginated the wall into the aortic valve orifice. Immediately, the vibration of the aortic wall became less intense, and he concluded that he had dilated the aortic valve. When examined twelve years later the patient was living and improved. Many years later, Dwight Harken performed Tuffier's procedure on dogs and cadavers. Unlike Tuffier, he was unable to dilate the aortic valve by this method. He reported the finding to his chief, Elliott Cutler, who replied in defense of Tuffier: 'Well, the patient survived thoracic surgery, and that was pretty good for his day!' " (Johnson, History of Cardiac Surgery, pp. 102-03). Tuffier describes this case on p. 147. Shumacker, Evolution of Cardiac Surgery, p. 116. Meade, History of Thoracic Surgery, p. 467. Copy of J. B. Murphy (with his bookplate). OCLC locates copies in these US libraries: Chicago, Georgetown, Harvard, NY Acad. Med., Pittsburgh. Bookseller Inventory # 14075
