About this Item

8°, red publisher's cloth with gilt lettering (some rubbing to upper cover), green ribbon marker. Folding map of United States is detached, fragile, and splitting at folds, but complete; one other map torn in half. Overall in good condition. Early marginal note on p. 434. lxii, 620 pp., with 60 [? see below] maps, town plans, and plans, of which 33 are double-page or folding. *** Second edition. Pages 439-566 cover the United States west of the Mississippi, including major towns and natural wonders such as Yosemite and Yellowstone. Highlights of San Francisco (just before the 1906 earthquake and fire) are on pp. 510-9, with a folding map of the city. A trip from Tacoma to Alaska is outlined on pp. 556-566. Mexico is described on pp. 567-586.The title page calls for 25 maps, 32 town plans, and 4 "plans spéciaux," for a total of 61. We count 6 plans on 3 leaves (4 maps of museums, 2 maps of battles at Gettysburg), plus a total of 54 maps and town plans - it is not always clear which is which, and occasionally more than one map appears on a page. There are no obvious indications (such as a stub or offset color) that a map is missing. The first edition appeared in Leipzig and Paris, 1894, with only 17 maps, 22 town plans, and 2 "plans spéciaux."*** NUC: CU-I; locating the first edition at NN, NB only.
