About this title

Four Plays by Odon Von Horvath: Kasimir and Karoline - Faith, Hope and Charity - Figaro Gets A Divorce - Judgment Day. -- Now considered as the most important, next to Brecht, of the dramatists who wrote in German in the 20th century. - Hungarian born von Horvath wrote plays and novels before his untimely death in 1938. He achieved his earliest success in 1931 and 1932 just before Hitler came to power in Germany, making productions of Horvath's politically-oriented plays impossible there. - Horvath's dramatic world linked itself to the t tradition of German folk theater, which influenced many later playwrights. Horvath's subject was the disintegrating social order in the years before Hitler's rise. This disintegration was chronicled chiefly in the language people spoke, their mannerisms, cliches, political and sentimental platitudes, and media jargon. Horvath centered his critique of German culture in the language of the masses. - This volume demonstrates Horvath's remarkable range of styles: taut realism of Faith, Hope and Charity and Judgment Day; the more panoramic Kasimir and Karoline, his great success of 1932; Figaro Gets a Divorce, acclaimed in its 1986 premiere in San Diego.
